Spicy Curried Potato Balls

These potato balls.

Spicy curry potato balls fried to crispy perfection: aka what every lunch bowl out there needs. Or dinner bowl. Maybe even breakfast? Cos yeah, they’re that good. Getting to eat leftover cold pizza after a night out kinda good… so I guess they would make a killer breakfast too? You know, an abundance of potato never hurts.

(((((((((Unless they’re dropeed at your poor head from a 8234234m altitude I guess))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))

Back to these very amazing balls. Have I mentioned they’re amazing?

They’re easily made from mashed boiled potatoes, some spices (if you’re super super lazy or live in a place with no access to ~fancier~ spices, you get to use your favourite curry powder mix – worry not, I won’t tell), a chickpea flour-water mixture to mimic an egg, and some crispy breadcrumbs. That’s it. As you see, it doesn’t take much to reach perfection when it’s potatoes we’re talking about.

I would, like, marry these balls.

Boil – Mash – Roll – Fry

See how easy that is? Except for the frying part, which is kinda tricky for me since I’m resident one from clumsy town and I might or might have not almost ended up in ER like a thousand friggin’ times but it’s okay because they’re worth it. Be careful with that oil though – it’s almost as hawt as you.

Jokes aside (not that you being hotter than the sun is a joke, you’re probably lovely), do be careful when frying things and no, they don’t come out as good if you try to bake them. I wish they did, because that’s just what this poor lazy gal needs, but sometimes things don’t work out the way they should and you cannot oven-bake what mother nature intended to be deep fried to absolute goodness.

I’m sorry.

Let me make that up for you by providing you with the most ~spicy~recipe you’ll see today.

You’re welcome.

Spicy Curried Potato Balls

Spicy Curried Potato Balls

  • 5 medium sized potatoes
  • 1 tsp. chilli powder
  • 1 tsp. turmeric powder
  • 1/4 tsp. cilantro powder
  • 1/4 tsp. garlic powder
  • 1/8 tsp. ground ginger
  • 1/8 tsp. ground cumin
  • 50 grams chickpea flour
  • 70 grams water
  • 150 grams panko breadcrumbs
  • sunflower oil, to deep fry

  1. Peel and boil the potatoes until they're tender enough to mash.
  2. Mash potatoes with spices and salt to taste and roll mixture into balls. If it's too dry, add a drizzle of oil (about 1-2 tsp.)
  3. In a bowl, mix together chickpea flour and water until a batter is formed. Add a bit of salt to it and roll the potatoes in this mixture.
  4. Next, roll the balls into the breadcrumbs.
  5. Heat oil in a saucepan or frying pan until it's warm enough. You'll know this by dropping a bit of batter into the oil and seeing whether it bubbles up or not (it should).
  6. Add balls in batches and fry them on medium heat until they're completely golden. It's easier to put them into the oil if you use a fork or similar so you don't burn yourself.
  7. When golden, use a slotted spoon to remove them from the oil and place them on some paper towels so they soak the extra oil.
  8. Enjoy warm!

Hope you guys enjoy these as much as I did!
