Crispy Cornmeal Chilli Pumpkin Fries

Long time no see, but as you might have noticed, there was a bit of trouble happening with the blog these past few weeks, so uploading was suuuuuper difficult. We’re going to be keeping things short and savoury today with a delicious recipe for pumpkin fries. You know I love the standard potato fries as much as the next girl, but let me tell you: these pumpkin fries? They’re definitely out of this world. Sweet, salty & spicy: this is a flavour combo that’s going to keep you on yout toes. They’re also soft and creamy on the inside, with a crispy exterior and a creamy bbq sauce to dip and take them to the next level (assuming that they’re level 190000000 already). So good.

Not that baked potato fries are unhealthy by any means: they can be a really wholesome side, especially when you keep the peel, which is full of vitamins, fibre and minerals. However, I find it so nice to have another option to go for when you get tired of regular potatoes or even sweet potatoes. And it’s great when it’s as wholesome as this one is!

Pumpkins are filled with beta-carotenes, which are the precursors to vitamin A. They’re also high in fibre, vitamin C and other nutrients. Moreover, they’re pretty low in calories (yet packed with good stuff!), so they are a pretty neat addition to your diet.

Then there’s cornmeal, which acts as the deliciously crispy cover of these lovely pumpkin bites. Corn has also a vast array of health benefits, such as a high iron and vitamin A content. What’s not to love?

Then we have a quick and simple bbq sauce. This time I mixed some cashew cream with chilli powder and bbq sauce, whisked and boom! Such an epic concoction was born. The spice really complements the pumpkin, and the smooth, velvelty texture is to die for.

Crispy Cornmeal Chilli Pumpkin Fries


  • 400 grams pumpkin, peeled and cubed
  • 100 grams cornmeal
  • 1 tbsp. chilli powder
  • 2 tbsp. olive oil
  • salt to taste
  • a handful of fresh parsley
  • for the sauce: cashew cream, bbq sauce and chilli powder


  1. Peel the pumpkin and cut them into small cubes.
  2. Whisk together cornmeal, chilli and salt and coat the pumpkin cubes in this mixture.
  3. Place the cubes in a baking tray and drizzle them with olive oil.
  4. Bake at 200ºC (400F) for 30-35 minutes or until they look golden and crispy.
  5. For the sauce, whisk together some cashew cream, bbq sauce and chilli powder.
  6. Enjoy!

    Pumpkin is one of my favorite starchy vegetables in the world! Japanese pumpkin, or kabocha squash, is my particular favorite. These fries look like the perfect recipe to cook it with! Never would have thought of cornmeal as an addition–but now I really have to try using it!
