High Protein Chocolate Mousse

List of good things that have happened to me today:

  • This mousse

The rest of my Friday has been all homework and stuff. And yes, by “stuff” I mean “more homework”, but hey what’s new. It’s my last year in school before I go to university and there’s like a month left until the ultimate deathly finals season arrives. It’s all downhill from here now, so you might not see me around here as often as you’re used to.

Only 3 Ingredients and it's fat and sugar free!

Don’t be surprised if from now on I’m just posting shamefully quick and easy recipes. And I mean recipes that so easy that it’ll actually make you question whether it should be called a recipe or not, like this mousse.

3 Ingredients + 5 Minutes = healthy chocolaty bliss in a bowl.

I honestly don’t know how come I haven’t posted this recipe before. It’s safe to say that I’ve made this +100 times and I’m not exaggerating here at all.

Only 3 Ingredients and it's fat and sugar free!

This mousse is awesome guys. Real awesome. When you try it you might get why I feel like my day is not complete if I don’t have this stuff after my workouts.

Why wouldn’t I, though? This deceptively decadent mousse is actually good for you. With 14 grams protein per small serving and virtually no fat and sugar, this is something you could eat everyday.

Now, I do encourage you to stir in some kind of healthy fat such as coconut oil or peanut butter if you’re having it after a tough workout. And same with sugar – your muscles do need some of the stuff to recover after all that stress you’ve been putting them trough. But to each his own, use what you prefer here. It will tastes amazing if you’re going the fat/sugar free route anyway.

The mousse alone, without sugar and fats, clocks at about 100 kcals per serving pictured. Yes, I got rid of that recipe calculator thing. Life isn’t about counting calories and anyway, that widgets is quite dumb and I suspected it never got the info right – au revouir widget!

By the way. Despite its name, this stuff doesn’t taste like the cream/yolks/sugar concoction we’re all know by the name of “mousse”. Mainly, because there is no cream in sight, you know.

Only 3 Ingredients and it's fat and sugar free!

But oh boy does it taste nice! It is like chocolate velvet, which is technically not cream *sighs because I love cream*, but it’s super delish on its own way too – I think we’d all agree here, right? And texture-wise, you won’t notice a thing, because this mousse is beyond creamy and smooth. Especially if you do let it sit in the fridge overnight, because it gets all airy like real mousse.

Now that’s what I call awesomeness.

High Protein Chocolate Mousse

This mousse tastes so sinful that you won't believe it's actually healthy!

  1. 500 grams fat free quark cheese
  2. 4 tablespoons cocoa powder
  3. liquid stevia (or sweetener of choice), to taste
  1. Stir all of the ingredients in a bowl until creamy.
  2. Eat right away or let it chill in the fridge for a couple of hours - it is much much better that way. Though it's also delicious if you eat it right after making it.
  1. You can also add some coffee granules, salt, vanilla, cinnamon, coconut, peanut butter, etc... to favor it. Let your imagination run wild!
  2. My favorite sweeteners here are sugar and stevia. From my point of view, honey and mape syrup don't taste great here. You might give them a go if you want though!
  3. Technically, thick greek yogurt works here, but it makes this taste like chocolate greek yogurt. It's nice, but nowhere near as good as the quark version, so I recommend you do try to find it!

I hope you enjoy your weekend! It’s going to be all cloudy and rainy where I live, so that way I won’t feel as bad when I have to spend the whole day sitting at home studying… But you know, some warmer weather would be nice…

How about you? Are you getting spring-like weather? And what’s your favorite post-workout treat? I need new ideas, because I’m making my local store running out of quark cheese. Sorry if you live around my area and haven’t been able to get your hands on some quark cheese for a while, by the way.

Happy Friday!

Awesome pictures and I make the same mousse for my self, but using greek yogurt. I love it!

Aww…never apologize for posting quick recipes, Consuelo. There is such a need for them, especially when they are as tasty and satisfying as this one for dessert!

  • Reply Nora (A Clean Bake) March 22, 2014 at 4:07 am

Quick and delicious recipes are the best! This one looks awesome. I have no idea where to get quark cheese here. Would greek yogurt be a decent replacement?

  • Reply Helen @ Scrummy Lane March 22, 2014 at 6:10 am

Ooh, chocolate velvet … that sold it to me, Consuelo! I actually love recipes that are hardly recipes because they’re usually so good for so little effort. This is a fabulous idea! All the best with your finals prep!

  • Reply Joanne March 22, 2014 at 12:39 pm

Good luck with your finals!! Anything you describe as chocolate velvet, sounds like something I need!

  • Reply Alyssa March 22, 2014 at 5:52 pm

Chocolate velvet, quick, high-protein…sign me up! I really enjoy fast recipes like this – they definitely motivate me to make them (especially when they look this good!). This mousse definitely sounds the like the “responsible” late-night-stressed-out-studying dessert to have. I may or may not have dove head first into a bag of chocolate chips during one particularly rough semester. Good luck, Consuelo! 🙂

I love recipes like this – I have ones that I make all the time for us at home but just never think to post on the blog (and then one day I’m like ohhh I should post this!) haha This sounds like a perfect sweet treat to get my sugar fix without being horribly over-decadent!

“3 Ingredients + 5 Minutes” Now that’s my kind of dessert equation. How can you go wrong. I’m intrigued by quark cheese. I don’t think I’ve seen in in our markets, but maybe I just haven’t looked hard enough. I’ll have to search for it — this sounds like a dish I certainly need to make!

  • Reply Christine @ Cooking with Cakes March 25, 2014 at 5:38 pm

Consuelo – Can you explain to me what quark cheese is? I’ve been hearing a lot about it on my healthy eating/fitness blogs – is it like cottage cheese? thanks girrrl 🙂

    • Reply Consuelo March 25, 2014 at 5:45 pm

I should write a post about this soon, because everybody seems to be curious about it haha. I thought you guys had it on the US??

Anyway. Quark cheese (also called farmers cheese I think!) is similar to really thick greek yogurt, but it has much more protein and less sugar. It is also less tangy so it is ideal for desserts.
I think it resembles a mixture of thick greek yogurt and pureed cottage cheese, if that makes sense.
It is typical in Germany, so I think you might be able to buy it from an specialty European shop.
      Hope I helped! xxx

Bye bye widget–let’s all just be awesome and live life and eat cake and salads and lots of Greek yogurt!

I do the same thing often, actually–I just mix cocoa powder and a little honey or maple syrup right into the yogurt container. It’s the best!
